The Model 280 Perma-Tune is intended for use with all gasoline powered Mercedes from the 1950’s vintage (including the Gull Wing) up to 1982, six or eight cylinder. These cars all have breaker points ignition, the later models have breaker points in addition to electronic ignition. In the later model cars, the Model 280 can be used to replace the Bosch ignition module. In all cases, the breaker points remain intact and are used only as a signaling device for the Model 280. The points will generally last the life of the engine and will not pit and burn. Simply set the points to the stock specification and set the ignition timing to stock specifications. The points dwell angle does not need to be set, the Model 280 only needs the points to open and close in order to operate. Since the 280 increases the ignition power by a factor of ten over breaker points ignition, spark plugs will not foul. The Model 280 is also compatible with breaker points replacement kits from other manufactures.
